This week I have experimented with how I am going to produce my film, I used the programme Flash to make my cartoon. I am very happy with how it has turned out.

Gantt Project - Schedule
Friday, 7 November 2008
Statement of intentions
For my project I am going to be doing a short animation film aimed for a wide variety of audience from children to parents. I would like to produce a moral story or a story with a confusing question that gets answers at the end with a twist.
I am going to be studying that makers of:
Kiwi
and Morph.
I am studying these makers because they use the same styles of animation i would like to try out. I am either going to use stop motion or flash animation. I am going to do a story about either an animal or a made up creature which is what both of these films have done. I also like the way the storyline includes a lot of narrative perspective to keep the audience intrigued with the films. Throughout the 'Kiwi' film there is restrictive narrative which keeps the audience guessing and wanting to know what the character is doing and why until the end. In the 'Morph' clips the audience can tell whats going to happen but the characters are completely oblivious to whats going on, this dramatic irony some humor to it.
I am going to use one of these narrative perspective techniques to base my storyline around so that I can help my audience understand the characters I create or portray an unusual view on everyday life.

Casablanca
I'm still working on this blog at home. =]...
Casablanca was made in 1942 and directed by Michael Curtiz. When it was being made it wasn't expected to be such big hit with the public, but it did.
Casablanca is considered a formalist film because of its 50's style form.
Mise-en-scene
The Mise-en-scene in the film has a very realist impression of the style people had at the time, but there is a recurring symbolized theme of stripes. The audience could interpret this as the characters in the film feeling like they are stuck in the country as if they are in prison but it could also just be an effect to add to the atmosphere of the film.Lighting
The lighting in the film causes a strong contrast with shadows and light by using chiaroscuro lighting, this causes a formalist affect because the shadows in the film look slightly unnatural. Some of the lighting in the film frames cause specific lines across the shots to add to the stripey theme.Camerawork

Classical hollywood cinema
Here are my examples of Classic Hollywood films:
It Happend One Night - 1934
King Kong - 1933
Mutiny On Bounty - 1962
Why are Classical Hollywood Films considered formalist?
Classical Hollywood Films use 'continuity editing' which means the camera and lighting work should not draw attention to themselves. This trys to gives us a realist impression on things but is not considered a realist style.

German Expressionism
In this lesson we looked at German expressionism. German expressionism is a type of film that was popular in Germany in the early 1920's.
What are the key features of German expressionism?
The example I looked at was a music video called 'Living dead girl' by Rob Zombie, even though it was made in 1999 it was based around the early German Expressionism film '(The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari). This showed me that some of the key features in German expressionism are: Dramatic lighting, distorted set, symbolic action and characterisation.
Where can the influence of G.E. be seen in film history?
I can see the influence of G.E in film history in films such as 'Run Lola Run' which is a later formalist film which includes all the key features of German Expressionism.

The Class Movie.
In this class we had a short project to create a short formalist film together. My job was to look at the mise on scene for the film.
Formalism & Realism
Before we started the project, we looked at the difference between formalist and realist programmes and films. I learnt the true meaning of formalist when I looked at examples of it. The example 'Pingu' helped me understand the meaning of it the most. I know that formalism is an unrealistic video that would not happen in real life. The form and dialogue of it is usually abstract. The closest form of realism you can find on T.V is documentary because it is the most factual and truthful thing you can watch.
The Project
The title of our film was 'The Moving man'. The title gave me the idea to have the main character as someone in an unrealistic costume, like in a monster mask. So people brought in masks, wigs and capes for the film. I think the final shots for the film looked very good because the costume fitted well in the scene and the props worked well with the storyline.
What I Learnt
Being in charge of the mise on scene helped me to understand what i would need to consider for my own film and I have a better understanding of how to prepare props for my film. This will come in great use for me when I'm doing me AS project.

GANTT Project

Today I have made my first Gantt project it was a bit confusing when i first used it but now I can use it very easily. I think my Gantt project was very clear and I can see myself following it very closely. I changed most of my tasks on my Gantt project to be parallel with each other because I think i will be multitasking a lot for this Moving Image AS project. I think multitasking this project will help me a lot more because I can mix more ideas together to give me a clearer view of what my work will turn out like. Since it is only the beginning of the project I am only through about 10% of my whole project. My end date is at the 23rd of September but i think i will be going over that a bit. One of the main things I have learnt from the Gantt project is how important planning and scheduling is, I now know exactly when and what I'm going to be doing for this unit.
I think I could use the Gantt Application in the future for certain projects I do in work and at home.

My First Entry
-Blogging for a course is going to be different for the first time. I guess it will be more interesting than writing down on paper all the time since that is what i always do in lessons
-The Below is a tester of uploading videos and an example of what kind of work i could be doing next year. I chose one of my favorite styles of work.
